I was recently talking with a Latina who had been in transition for more than a year, looking for a job in tech marketing and communications.
She had invested in a Prospanica membership, hoping to meet accomplished Latino professionals that would connect her to job leads. But, she was not succeeding at getting post-event responses from the go-getters she met. There was one exception - a woman who was also an active fashion and beauty blogger on the side. That bond, forged over a common interest, led to the woman helping this Latina land a new job.
So, the next time you're out meeting new people, or even if you are just connecting with them on LinkedIn, listen for and focus on shared passions. Think about networking as a way to serve others and learn, rather than putting pressure on yourself to get a job out of it. Don't worry if you don't bond with every person. Quality connections around what excites you both are more important than having many connections that are not moved to follow up.
TRY THIS
When you get to an event, scan the room for people who are alone, and introduce yourself as follows:
Script: Hi, I'm [your name]. {Listen for their name} Nice to meet you [say their name]. I'm a [your area of expertise]. My favorite thing about my work is [what excites you]. How about you? What do you enjoy about your line of work?
Example: Hi, I'm Sandra Diaz. Nice to meet you Claudia. I'm a career coach for bicultural marketers. I love seeing people light up when they land a role that once seemed out of reach. How about you? What do you enjoy about your line of work?"
You'll notice that the conversation flows more naturally when you both focus on what you enjoy about work and life. It will also give you better ideas of how to follow up with them.
When connecting on LinkedIn, tailor your invitation to include this message:
Script: [Person’s Name], I came across your profile as we are both [common industry, title, cultural background, alma mater, LinkedIn contacts, etc.]. I thought we might mutually benefit from connecting here on LinkedIn. Best, [Your Name]
Example: Claudia, I came across your profile as we are both B2C marketers. I thought we might mutually benefit from connecting here on LinkedIn. Best, Sandra Diaz
After the person agrees to connect, send them a message complimenting them on something you found out about them from their profile. Ask them also about their favorite thing about their line of work, mention yours, and see if they respond. Again, do not worry if people do not reply back. Focus on those who do.
